Overview

After the split between Emerson & Green, Green kept the original Emerson & Green Hotel at 236 Hurumzi set deep within the maze of alleyways of old Stone town on Zanzibar Island. This famous little hotel still offers a great dining experience on the roof but you need to book well in advance. The rooftop restaurant was previously a Tea House which itself may have been designed as an observation point to control the activities of the port which was located in the waters just in front of the nearby “House of Wonders”.

The Emerson on Hurumzi building at 236 Hurumzi Street, was built in the 1870s by the powerful merchant Sir Tharia Thopan who served as a principal financial adviser to Sultan Bargash and was the head of customs.

Emerson on Hurumzi has just 10 lovely bespoke rooms including two suites with their own private tea houses. The double rooms have a queen size double antique Zanzibari bed, with an en suite bathroom.
