Overview

After Emerson & Green split, Emerson & Spice was created in addition to Emerson on Hurumzi. Both are lovely individual hotels but haring the same fabulous design and ethos. Emerson & Spice is not easy to find, buried deep in the maze of alleyways of old Stone town on Zanzibar Island. The hotel retains the character and boutique feel of what went before with just 12 individual rooms, all except one with their own verandah. All rooms are equipped with a small fridge, air conditioner, fan, and high ceiling mosquito net. The double rooms have one queen size double antique Swahili bed, enclosed en suite WC and bath and shower that is open or semi-open to the room.

The principal structure which now houses Emerson Spice is actually a combination of two buildings and several distinct styles of architecture. The older L-shaped wing on the Northeast side, built in the Swahili Arab style, was originally owned by the last Swahili ruler of Zanzibar, Muhammad bin Ahmed, known as the Mwinyi Mkuu.
